Update: The information in the Indian Express story turns out to be wrong. See this post for both an update and a rant.

Hoping to take a big leap forward in research in pure sciences for a technological edge, the Government plans to introduce a new programme at Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) which will encourage young scientists to pursue research and development in their streams.

In a proposal being placed before the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) tomorrow, the Government has suggested that two students be identified from each of the 20-plus departments at IISc who would get Rs 25 lakh each to pursue their research.

[...]

The efforts are part of the Government’s promise in the 2005-06 Budget where Finance Minister P Chidambaram announced a grant of Rs 100 crore to make IISc a world-class university.

    Abi,

Wow, This is great news for the students of IISc. It would give the recipients a good training in being a PI and would inspire them towards a research career.

But I have some doubts regarding its effectiveness. Since research students are attached to their advisors from the beginning, I am not sure whether the recipient would have a free hand in using the money for the project of their choice or would it end up being used for lab/department upliftment as is done in many departments with the contingency for books given to CSIR scholars.

    Hi Ramanarayan,

The information in the Indian Express story is wrong. The 25 lakh largesse is not for students, but for 'young faculty members'.

    More information here.

    Sorry!
